Teaching packs

AWSA-Be presents teaching packs which are primarily aimed at associations wishing to expand their practical skills, and especially at associations for continuing education. These specific teaching packs are adapted to the linguistic level of the target groups and have been proposed since 2011 thanks to the support of the “Fondation Roi Baudouin”.

The packs cover the following themes : Arab feminism, Rights of women from the Arab world, Identities, Communities and Stereotypes and Sexual health and relationships. The teaching packs can be viewed at the AWSA-Be office.

The goals:

  • To provide resources and tools to professionals working in a multicultural environment, particularly with people from the Arab world
  • To allow them to feel more comfortable with the target groups, to get to know them better
  • To equip them with information set about the sociocultural and religious background of the target groups

Description of the available packs :

Pack “Sexual health and relationships”

This pack  is aimed at, among others, associations for continuing education who work for the emancipation of women from the Arab world. It also intended for family planning organisations that wish to expand their knowledge about various issues. The approach is based upon role-playing, practical activities as well as theory.

The goals

  • To present to participants a reference framework that includes the theme of equality between men and women, the freedom to act from a personal as well as a professional point of view
  • To propose a positive, creative and dynamic approach to associations that organise group activities around these issues
  • To discover how the human body functions (conception, contraceptives., etc.)
  • To inform and raise awareness about STDs
  • To encourage respect and conscious decisions within relationships
  • To discuss sexuality and love, taking into account the cultural approach

Content

The pack contains presentation cards with explanations. It also contains a pedagogical guide for the sociocultural trainer, photos with comments and three educational booklets (anatomy and reproduction, STDs and sexuality education, and gender issues). The pack also contains evaluation questionnaires and references. It comes with a DVD containing the interview of Marie Huybrechts, sexologist and psychotherapist, as well as an interview of Imam Fathallah, teacher of Islamic religion.

Pack “Identities, Communities and Stereotypes”

This pack deals with issues linked to identities and withdrawal into one’s identity, discrimination, cultural isolationism, stereotypes, prejudices as well as their origins and dangers.

The goals:

  • To analyse the process of identity building and its evolution
  • To identify stereotypes and compare them to reality
  • To understand the notion of “belonging”, its risks and downwards spiral
  • To identify stereotypes and present the many different women from the Arab world

Content

The pack contains presentation cards with explanations. It also contains a pedagogical guide for the sociocultural trainer, photos with comments, a picture-language game as well as an evaluation questionnaire. The pack comes with a DVD of the interview of Mr. Aziz, Professor of Social Psychology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles.

Pack “ Feminism of the Arab world”

This pack  deals with the history of Arab feminism, well-known Arab feminist figures and the link between Arab feminism and feminism in the world.

The goals:

  • To popularise feminism and make it accessible to a larger public
  • To inform particpants about feminist activism in the Arab world
  • To facilitate participation in the feminist movement

Pack “ Arab Women’s Rights”

This pack  addresses women’s rights in six Arab countries: 3 countries of the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) and 3 countries of the Mashreq (Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq).

The pack also focuses on the CEDAW (the Convention on the eradication of all forms of discrimination against women), the associative movement in the Arab world and the interferences of certain laws in different societies.

The goals

  • To inform about the situation of women from the Arab world
  • To show the positive movement and actions of women from the Arab world in order to improve their rights.
  • To mobilise and inform women about issues related to their rights and to laws in different countries.
  • If necessary, to provide tools to resort to associations abroad

Content

The pack contains presentation cards with explanations. It also contains a pedagogical guide for the sociocultural trainer, cartoons, a picture-language game as well as evaluation questionnaires. The pack comes with a DVD of the interview of Julien Wolsey, lawyer specialised in immigration law, about “double jurisdiction”.
